HOW TO FIGURE THINGS OUT AT LIGHT SPEED
CONFESSIONS OF A HARD HEAD
We all go through the same phase when we start learning a new skill. We believe we can learn everything by ourselves and that we don’t need any help. Why ask for help when there's a YouTube video with the answer to every question under the sun? All the information is just out there for free, we just need to find it.
At one point in my life I took the old saying “if it’s to be, it’s up to me” to the extreme. I felt that I didn’t need the help of anyone to learn a new skill. I’m a self-taught, self-made man that grits his teeth when the going gets tough and makes it all happen. In part, I had the mindset of learning everything on my own because of my learning disability, Dyslexia. The old learning methods didn’t work for me, so I felt that I had to do it my way.
When starting out with something new, watching a YouTube video is a good approach to uncover others’ insights on the topic. However, as you move forward, you realize you just can't figure out everything by yourself. Let me tell you how I learned that lesson.
Several years back, when I was leaving the bank that I had worked at, I ran into a major problem I just didn't know how to solve. So, as the self-taught person I was, I started looking for a solution. Because I was great at figuring things out on my own, I just thought I didn't need any help.
So, I went through every YouTube video on the topic, along with several audiobooks. With all that research, do you know what I ended up finding? Nothing! No matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't find the solution to this problem.
I was ready to give up on finding a solution to the problem when I met with a fellow board member of an association that we served on together. At the time, I didn’t realize it, but Dennis is an expert in the field I was having trouble with. In casual conversation, I mentioned to him the problem I was having.
What happened next still shocks me up to this day. The problem I had been trying weeks to solve on my own was solved in a matter of a few hours. That day, I learned a powerful lesson. The power of a mentor having a mentor. It really doesn’t matter how smart we are—there are some answers we just can't figure out on our own. We end up wasting all our time and motivation trying to find a solution. When that happens, it's better to find the help of someone willing to share their experience with us. It’s wise to look for someone who has gone before us and found the way through the problem.
There are people who are experts in what they do. These leaders can give you the objective advice you need and a different perspective of the situation. With their help, you can find the solution you need much faster.
I cannot tell you the difference having mentors has made in my life. With the help, of my mentor, Dennis, I was able to learn things faster and reach my goals in a fraction of the time.
RECALIBRATE >> RESTART >> THRIVE
Having the courage to create change in your life isn’t for the faint of heart. The ability to transform has always been invaluable to me—a privilege I do not take for granted. I assess the wisdom of those that have gone before me and model what they know to be true.
I’ve changed and grown as a person tremendously over the past decade of my life. Some of the things that worked for me five years ago, one year ago, or even a few months ago are different. There is tremendous power in embracing change. I am ready for it, are you? Together we can learn to let go of old ideas, habits, and beliefs in order to move forward—to progress.
To help you with this, I created a program called Recalibrate - The Uncommon Success Map.
