HAVE A FLUID APPROACH TO A STATIC VISION

Great Leaders Challenge the Process in Keeping the Mission Fresh

HAVE A FLUID APPROACH TO A STATIC VISION

FLUID APPROACH TO A STATIC VISION- eric miller.us
Having a laser specific vision and communicating it to stakeholders is what great leaders do well. Over time however, a mission can get stale resulting in complacency and fail to deliver on the brand promise. Any organizational system will unconsciously conspire to maintain the status quo and prevent any necessary change. Great leaders are fluid in their process in driving the mission. They constantly innovate new ways to attract and retain internal and external raving fans of their brand.

Great Leaders Mandate Evaluation
Critical thinking leaders must challenge the mission process and evaluate performance on a regular basis in order to remain true to their mission and vision. Here are three ideas for having a fluid approach to a static vision.
Keeping the Mission Fresh- eric miller.us
1. Communicate the vision. In the day-to-day operations in delivering on the company’s promises, it can be easy to forget where you’ve come from and where you want to go. On a regular basis, talk about the history of the organization and the vision. Create raving fans internally that will serve raving fans externally.

2. Evaluate through fresh eyes. Job descriptions are created to give clarity to team members and a useful evaluation tool. But they can also create situations for employees to work around the system in order to do their job well. Servant leaders ask for feedback, so they can more accurately evaluate how each job function is carried out in serving the mission. Evaluate the process with a new employee that has a fresh perspective on how they do their job.

Because you have created a culture of trust, team members that are excellent in their job performance may not use discernment in giving critical feedback. As a leader it will be important that you not take it personally and use the valuable insight to improve system performance.

3. Challenge the process. The responsibility of a successful mission is on the leader. Your team will look to you in how you lead them when change is needed in order to avoid the status quo and complacency. Does your current process deliver the results in driving the mission? Is the mission stale? How can the process become more fluid while maintaining the mission and driving the vision?

In day- to- day business operations, there can be blind spots in the activities needed for completing a mission successfully. Sometimes it takes an outsider’s viewpoint to see the obvious. Seek out the advice of an expert that doesn’t have bias about your organization. Consider partnering with a business coach or consultant.
