HERE LIES ERIC, ALL USED UP7/7/2020 TRULY LIVING WHAT YOU VALUE THE MOSTHERE LIES ERIC, ALL USED UPRecently I was a guest on the show called- “Made From Scratch. “( https://youtu.be/kioNjgRQiDs) At the end of the interview, the host, Gabriel Leal, asked me, “When it’s all said and done, how do you want to be remembered?” My response: “Here lies Eric, all used up.” In the days following the show, I carefully considered what those words meant to me. I envision these words being the ultimate definition of success. This sentiment is something that inspires me to do my very best every day, and the motivation to be better than I was yesterday. WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU? On an emotional level, my values are the compass that guides me. We can work against our values because we are unaware of what they are, from a conscious point of view. When life gives us choices, we don't always choose with our emotional intelligence. When we make conscious choices that are misaligned with our unconscious, we become conflicted. That is why re-evaluating values on a continual basis is very important. I am a very curious person by nature. This has proven to be very useful in helping me in my search for fulfillment. I decided after the interview that I would re-evaluate what is most important to me. I had recently been doing the values elicitation exercises with clients and thought it would be a great time to do it again, myself. What did I discover? They had changed again. The last time I completed the exercise was on April 11, 2020. When I am examining my values, I ask myself two questions: What is most important in my life? And, over the last 3-4 months, what has been important to me? With all the challenging events we are experiencing, I discovered that my top three values- life choices had changed in priority. Old order: 1. Peace, 2. Purpose, 3. Integrity. New order: 1. Integrity, 2. Purpose, 3. Peace. Life experiences change what is important to us. Uncovering your number one value and choosing to live it will be the north star heading of your compass. In my case, there is a common denominator of what I want on my tombstone and my values. Contributing to helping others stop suffering from emotional labor, lights me up. Continually improving who I am as a person, and finding opportunities to express love, enables me to live a fulfilling life. HACK TO A MORE FULFILLING LIFE Focus on fulfilling the needs of love, contribution, and growth and you will meet all six human needs at one time. Consider the following questions: 1. If you were giving love every day, if you were growing every day, if you were contributing every day, how much security and certainty would you have in your life? 2. If you were expressing love every day, would you have your need for variety met? 3. If you were learning and growing into something new, would have your need met for variety? 4. If you were loving, growing, and contributing, how much significance would that give you?
