HOW MUCH ARE DISTRACTIONS COSTING YOU?

​What a day, you think to yourself as you scroll through your social media feed. My brain’s fried… I just need a few minutes to unwind. Your favorite actress is streaming live while she makes her family dinner—all 45 riveting minutes of it—and your neighbor’s sister’s friend’s new puppy learned a new trick.
 
After you get involved in a heated exchange with your second cousin twice removed about the hot topic of the day, you set aside your phone and turn on the TV. You found this new show the other day, and three episodes pass before you glance at the time. Your heart sinks to your toes. Another day nearly gone, just like that, and you have little to show for it.
 
That’s sad, but what’s even worse is that so many of us repeat this cycle day after day.
But what’s the big deal? you ask. I work hard. I deserve to relax. That may be true, but let’s do the math. Let’s assume that your Netflix binge and Instagram habit sucks up two hours of your day. If you were to repeat this day in, day out, you’d be looking at 14 hours per week, 56 hours per month, and a staggering 672 hours each year… all wasted.

What does it mean when you use all that time on seemingly useless distractions? You get left behind. Remember, life moves fast. Your customers won’t wait for you to acquire the skills you need to improve in your performance, they’ll just go to the competition. Or maybe you’ll wonder why you’re not better at that hobby, or in better shape. When you’re faced with any of the above situations, you probably won’t wish you’d spent more time watching TV or reposting ridiculous memes.
 
We live in a world full of distractions coming at us from every angle, each one a scavenger for one of our most precious commodities: our time. How can we face these distractions and defeat them every time? And how can we, instead, use our time for what truly matters? You’re not alone in this struggle—I’ve traded my valuable time for cheap entertainment, over and over again, and I’ve asked myself these very same questions. And then it came to me.

The reason so many people give in to distractions every single day is because they aren’t laser-focused on what they ultimately want. It’s easy to be distracted when you have a lot of free time on your hands and nothing to do with it; however, if you have a vision that you’re passionate about, you will pour your most precious commodities—your time and attention—into what you want to achieve. Everything else will pale in comparison. No one will have to force you to focus, because there’s a fire burning within.
 
Suddenly, there won’t be time for anything else but that which lights you up. And when you discover this goal, this thing that awakens your excitement and your drive, something will change within you. Slowly but surely, a shift will begin, and the desire to catch up on the latest season of Chicago Fire will fade. Instead, you’ll have an unquenchable thirst for the challenge you’ve set for yourself. And the best part of this shift is, when you eventually look back at your life and see all that you’ve accomplished… you’ll be happy you made the right decision.

​When we work and work without having clarity of what we ultimately want, we end up at a completely different destination than what we wanted. I was doing that, and I felt like a failure as if my soul was deflated like a balloon, unfulfilled and unhappy.    
 
Is it time to ditch the hamster wheel and the endless, monotonous miles in favor of something so much better? Creating an UNCOMMON outcome, requires that we do UNCOMMON things.

It’s possible to achieve your goals AND enjoy the journey at the same time. That’s right. Simply shift your focus to what you ultimately want, and your goals will come into alignment with your vision. Then…. choose to enjoy the process.
