2. THE 8 AREAS OF GOAL SETTING
Goals are simply defined dreams with an action plan that has an expiration date. You will find it useful to categorize them into separate buckets, so you can measure your satisfaction level. You can then decide which of them that you would like to pursue in the short term.
a. GAIN CONFIDENCE: In the pursuit of happiness, you might have lost confidence in yourself as a result of not achieving goals. Re-gaining confidence in those areas can be a big challenge if done on our own. Partnering with a Life coach is a great way to receive enthusiastic support and unbiased input to identify action steps for re-gaining confidence.
b. FIND YOUR PURPOSE: The majority of people work a job their entire career that doesn’t align with their values and beliefs. Making the effort to find your purpose will create fertile ground for happiness.
c. CAREER AND MONEY: The two usually go hand in hand. Once you have clearly defined your life’s purpose the career will reveal itself. The old saying “do what you love, and you’ll never work another day in your life” will be true for you too. The money will then fall into the importance that it has in your life.
d. IMPROVE YOUR RELATIONSHIPS: Increase the passion trust and love in your intimate relationship. Improve all of your personal relationships like those with your children and friends.
e. PHYSICAL AND HEALTH: Improve your physical and mental health and optimize your happiness. There is a direct correlation between having a healthy well-being and overall life satisfaction. Maximizing your health will also be effective in losing and then maintaining your weight.
f. BECOME A BETTER LEADER: Leadership is often associated with business executives, managers and politicians. Being a good leader in the home is also very important. Influence change with those that you are in your life.
g. INCREASE YOUR PRODUCTIVITY: Distractions are everywhere today, making time for what matters is more of an effort than what it was in the past. Time quickly slips away if not managed properly. Do you feel overworked, and stressed out on a frequent basis? Effective time management will increase your productivity and happiness.
h. IMPROVE YOUR MINDSET: Calibrating your compass will improve your mindset so you can be in alignment with your spiritual wellbeing. Improving this area will have residual effects in all the other aspects of your life satisfaction.
3. WHAT IS GOAL SETTING AND HOW DOES IT FIT IN WITH MY DREAMS?
On the football field as a kid you heard of touchdowns and having goals for achieving them. More than likely, you heard goals talked about on T.V. If you have ever not achieved a goal you might think of it as a four- letter word. Goal setting involves more than wishing or dreaming that you could achieve it. Effective goal setting requires that you first declare your intentions to paper and then create an action plan with an expiration date to get them.
4. HOW TO SET GOALS - Read more >>>
Knowing how to create goals is almost as important as setting them. When setting goals think of them as a leg in the journey to a destination. Having long-term “big picture” goals is the final destination in the journey of achieving the declared goals. Now that you know where you are going, work backwards from the declared big goals to where you are now, and establish small goals or miles stones.
Think about this concept in another way. Let’s say that you wake up tomorrow morning get into your car and plan on driving from California to New York non-stop. If you are an inexperienced traveler/goal setter, you won’t consider that you will need to stop for food, gas and the occasional rest stop break. You don’t consider that small attainable goals or stays overnight in a hotel will recharge your batteries and give you the motivation to continue on. About mid-way across the country you give up on the big lofty goal and make up an excuse as to why going to New York or your big goal, was never a good idea anyway.
This is where people get overwhelmed in the goal setting process and give up. Without setting smaller, short term achievable goals, the destination or the big goal can seem insurmountable. Getting professional help from a life coach can help you determine appropriate smaller goals, so you are constantly making progress towards the bigger goal.
5. WHY GOAL SETTING WITH A WRITTEN PLAN IS SO EFFECTIVE
The conscious mind is the analytical mind and the subconscious mind analyzes everything that you experience; everything you see, hear feel, taste and smell. Every bit of input you receive is analyzed by the conscious mind in the conscious state. The conscious mind is a filter of sorts and everything must pass through that filter to get to your subconscious mind. The subconscious mind on the other hand is your literal mind.
The most effective goal setting process occurs when a written plan is formulated and action steps for the plan are mapped out. With this strategy you are then using both the conscious and sub-conscious mind. The analytical side or your conscious mind is declaring the intentions for growth and your subconscious mind creates the reality. In order for goal setting to be optimized the two must go together.
