MATCHING BAGGAGE FOR YOUR BUSINESS JOURNEY

WHAT BEHAVIORS MAKE YOUR ORGANIZATION GREAT?

MATCHING BAGGAGE FOR YOUR BUSINESS JOURNEY

MATCHING BAGGAGE FOR YOUR BUSINESS JOURNEY-ericmiller.us
Great leaders know the importance of defining key behaviors that furthers the mission. When there is a crisis in your business, like when a sale falls apart or when a major client leaves for the competition, how do your people respond when they are together? Does suspicion arise as to who screwed up? Are they given the benefit of the doubt? Or, is yours a culture that treats bad news as being good for business?

Matching Baggage in a Mixed Matched Culture

As a great leader you know the importance of hiring exceptional people that are better than you in their field of expertise. They also bring their core values and emotional baggage to the company as you do. Create a culture that takes all the emotional baggage of staff and finds a way to mix it together effectively. Many experts have concluded that having organized friction will create a superior business culture and a superior business.

Optimized Mindset- Two Agreements Exercise

The two agreements exercise is about personal accountability for staff, leadership and the organization as a whole. Practicing these agreements will be the compass that drives activities for achieving the organizational mission.

The two Agreements exercise will take some time to complete. It should be done over several weeks and even months. Also when you get together, it is preferable, that you not meet on an empty stomach. When blood sugar is low, in some it can cause irritability.

Who should you have in these meetings? New employees and substantially tenured staff. Think of these get togethers as brainstorming sessions, not complaint sessions. Everyone has an equal voice and no decisions are made in the meeting.

Agreement #1: Own it and Make it Superior. In another blog called: Do you have a culture of suspicion? The emphasis is on creating a culture of trust. Creating a safe space where people can be human and forgiven when they screw up, provides a place for ideas for personal growth to occur. When everyone is an active stakeholder in making “it” superior, the organization is unified and ideas flow for improvement, while honoring the values of the company. Having this mindset allows people to take ownership of their baggage.

Key Question to ask: Is there any baggage of the past that is preventing me from perceiving this situation accurately? How can I personally engage beyond my job description?

Agreement #2: Collaborate and Make it Superior. Part 1, Train someone in your department to do your job. This is not a succession plan, nor is it anything to be afraid of. When you empower others, you are creating job security. Collaborating with someone on your team about your duties, can be a very enlightening. You might even find new ways to be superior in your job. This is also an opportunity to reinforce the corporate culture.

Key question to ask: What is preventing me from doing a superior job? Do I have any baggage of the past that would prevent me from learning a new way to get the job done?

Part 2; Consider how each department can collaborate in making “It” superior. The goal is to create synergy company-wide.

Key question to ask: Where can I leverage my talents outside of my department or team? Do I have any baggage of the past that would prevent me from lending my talents to another team or department?

Final Thoughts to Ponder

Define what makes you culture lovable and identify the behaviors that reinforce that culture. Do these behaviors and further your mission. Need some help with this? Get some outside business coaching and pinpoint your values and align them with your mission.
