Great Leaders Coach Team Members on Finding Their PurposeNOT JUST FOR THE PAYCHECK![]() Having business success is what every leader wants in their organization. Great Leaders have assembled a team of doers that know “what” makes them successful in their role, “why” they are part of the organization and the clarity on “how” to do their job with laser precision. Uncovering each team member’s purpose of what drives them, besides the paycheck will enable you as a leader to have raving fans of your brand. Once you figure out what “it” is that has your employees jumping out of bed on Monday morning without an alarm clock, will give you a team member that doesn’t need to be led. The Uncommon Cashier One of the periods in my growth as a leader was when I served at the Better Business Bureau. I loved working for the bureau. Most of the time, I was that guy that would wake up on Monday morning before the alarm went off, excited about going to work. I felt a true sense of purpose in my role in contributing to the mission of the BBB. ![]() Having this mindset, I would recognize other people that were thrilled about their work as well. One of those such people was Ruth. This vibrant positive person was a cashier at my local dry cleaners. Without fail she would have my dry-cleaning hanging on the hook ready for me to pick-up when I walked in the door. She would always greet me with a smile and call me by my first name. I had experienced this incredible service for a while when one day at a staff meeting I heard her name mentioned. At first, I wasn’t sure that the board member was referring to “my” Ruth. My ego was bruised because I thought that I was so “special” as a result of the way that she treated me. I thought that I was the best customer in the world. As it turns out Ruth was routinely recruited to host customer service workshops for Wells Fargo all over the state of Minnesota. Was Ruth a past business owner? Had she been a business consultant or coach? Was she the manager of the dry cleaners? Ruth was none of those things. She was a middle -aged woman who had found her purpose and loved being a cashier. She went to work every day not just for the paycheck. She went to work to serve others in the best way she knew how. Ruth did her job extraordinarily well because she knew the: What- why and how.
