When we choose appropriate emotions, we can then shape thoughts that will propel us towards achieving what we ultimately want. Transformed leaders know that they must continually renew their minds in order to achieve a new goal. Merely taking-action in changing a behavior isn’t enough in sustaining momentum when chasing a goal. Renewal of the mind is the first step in successful goal setting. I’m an executive coach who also believes in having a coach for myself. I have had many breakthroughs in my personal journey as a result of being coached. A few years ago, I had a transformation in one particular session that reshaped how I set goals today. Linda had been working with me for a while and learned my thought process, what made me successful, and why I would fall short in achieving goals. Being involved in the process of transformation requires changing the way we think. I grew up thinking that I was never good enough. My early beliefs were created from traumatic experiences. I would Delete and/or, Distort and/or, Generalize and/or, experiences and assign meaning to events and repeat the process in my mind over, and over, and over again. As an adult, when I would have a trigger pulled like when being criticized, I would be thrown off-course and be blinded to any possible wisdom in what was being expressed to me.
