OVERCOME THE OVERWHELM OF MUNDANE TASKSBuild the Life You Want with Three Blocks![]() I admire people that can host events for several guests in their home. For me, the thought of it makes my skin crawl. My friend Linda is excellent at putting on dinner parties for twenty or so people, and she makes it appear effortless. At one of those events, I asked her if it was overwhelming to host such a fancy dinner affair. She said that it wasn’t at all because her focus was on putting smiles on the faces of her guests and spending time with them. For me, all the mundane tasks and details of pulling off a black-tie event would prevent me from even attempting it. On the other hand, I found training, preparing, and mental conditioning for a road bicycle race easy-peasy. This article is about overcoming sometimes-overwhelming tasks of the daily grind to accomplish what is most important. What appears to be the genius work for some people is emotional labor for others. Why is that? It’s because we chunk down, or minimize, the effort of mundane and sometimes difficult tasks in order to achieve our purpose-driven mission. Have you ever wondered why legendary athletes or successful businesspeople appear to be “lucky” all of the time? The rest of us just sit back in awe of the appearance of effortless achievement.
When we know what we want, we can then do our genius work and chunk down our long to-do lists WHAT IS CHUNKING? Chunking involves breaking down difficult and sometimes monotonous tasks into manageable pieces or chunks for achieving the ideal outcome. Why is it critical to chunk down or create blocks? By doing this, you will defeat the feeling of being overwhelmed and overcome with to-do lists. As humans, we can only focus on three things at one time. Having clarity of your ultimate vision will enable you to associate related life categories into blocks. Ideally, you want a maximum of three associated blocks. Example: My bigger vision is to help leaders who struggle with having difficult conversations to better manage their emotions and optimize their communication. I named my vision Titan. I’ve identified three blocks associated with my bigger vision. My blocks/chunks/categories: 1- Physical fitness 2- Business 3- Relationships Within these categories/blocks or chunks, I create to-do lists. On a daily basis, I break down my to-do list into those three categories. Seeing the tasks to be completed on paper helps me to prioritize what needs to be done and decide what and who will get the list done.
