HOW TO FIND YOUR PURPOSE
Three Hacks to Become Purpose-Driven and Experience More Happiness
Everyone seems to be inspired to find their purpose. As a young leader, my purpose was focused on having the biggest possible paycheck. The older that I got the less happy I became despite all the stuff that I accumulated. It seemed that purpose eluded me because I was tuned into WIIFM (What’s In It For Me.) It was when I connected the dots to purpose and happiness that my life changed dramatically.
Purpose and knowing your “why” are well connected.
The longer I coach executives the clearer I am on the vision for my life. My purpose is clear to me that I want to help as many executives, professionals and leaders to refresh their why.
Another by-product of knowing my “why” was that I became a much happier person. Why was this? It’s because I was fulfilling my human need of contribution and the by-product was happiness as a result of living on purpose.
Why is Contributing to Others Important to Happiness and Fulfillment?
To go beyond our own needs and to give to others. A life is incomplete without the sense that one is making-a-contribution to others or to a cause. It is in the nature of human beings to want to give back, to leave a mark on the world. Giving to others may mean giving time to community service, making a charitable donation, planting trees, writing a book, or giving to one’s children.
Not only can everyone contribute in some way, but contribution is essential to a sense of fulfillment. Often times the act of giving sparks joy within us.
What is Your Unique Contribution to the World?
Purpose carries you through the perception of barriers and creates the necessary momentum for achieving purpose-driven goals. When great leaders like Larry Merlo, the former CEO and President of CVS Health, defined his “Why,” the “how” became the means to the end in making a difference and purposely contributing to others.
