Categorize Urgency and Be a Fun Magician
Recently I had one of those milestone birthdays. It was one of those that gives pause to the accomplishments in life. I was a bit taken back at first because I reflected on how I seemed to not get overwhelmed in my 20s and 30s. So… I did what I often do when I feel stuck. I got on my mountain bike and went for a ride.
On that ride, I realized that I really didn’t manage life all that well, back then, I just perceived that I did. Changing my state allowed me to look at the past with a more accurate perspective. I then realized that I am indeed more productive today with less stress and …. happier with my life. I am more self-aware and get into a peak state on a regular basis. I am able to get out of my head, and defeat stress, and overwhelm. And best of all, I am living life on purpose and making a much more positive impact on the lives of those, that I coach and my personal relationships.
WHAT IS YOUR PURPOSE?
The mention of the word purpose can seem cliché—or is it just me? Simply stated, purpose is the reason WHY we do something. When you are clear about “WHY” you are doing something you can then move closer to attaining your ideal outcome.
Right about now you might be saying to yourself, ok, Eric I get it, but I seem to get overwhelmed when I think about my purpose all the time.
Perhaps it’s time to get it out of your head and onto a piece of paper. I wrote it all down and then …
Seeing it all on paper seemed to make things worse. I thought to myself, great I’ve just created another list on top of my already extensive list of things to do.
HOW TO LIVE LIFE ON PURPOSE AND DEFEAT OVERWHELM
Are you a person that seems to have a million things to do … and it’s all in your head? Keeping it in your head can create a great deal of stress. We can only focus on five to nine things at a time. Anything we do above that and we aren’t able to do very well.
So… what’s the solution?
Is it in making yet another to-do list? Or, do we just surrender and let it go? Perhaps a combination of those things with a twist.
Chunk down that long to-do list.
What is chunking down mean? It means, taking all that life is throwing at you and putting it into
ideal-sized groups that your mind can handle. Chunking fits the things you are committed to doing into a few categories and lets you know the order you’re going to accomplish them.
Let’s have some fun.
GET SOME PAPER AND A PEN
Once you have answered these questions, get another blank sheet of paper and draw a line down the middle of the page. On one side of the page list all the business/professional things that you need to do. On the other side of the page list all the personal things that you need to do.
Now, look at both lists.
What can you eliminate or delegate? What are some categories that you could put these things into? Now choose six to eight categories.
Examples: Health, Wealth, Lifestyle, Relationships, Business, Leadership Development, Personal Development, etc.
JUICE IT UP
Once you have determined your categories, juice them up with some fun names.
Example: I label my relationship category as “ the Fun Magician.”
Now look at your categories and determine the priorities that will help you get the ideal outcome that you really want. Then …
